Her Virgin Voyage

I have yet to blog about the Resort collections this season, despite the fact that they've been getting more attention that ever before. I believe this is due to the fact that Anna demanded shows from many designers, as opposed to simple presentations. My choice to not blog on Resort due to my busy work schedule, though I wish I had started because I have been quite impressed with a season of clothes I usually skip over.

Today I stumbled upon Sarah Burton's first full collection for Alexander McQueen. While it comes nowhere close to "the real thing," Burton's debut rightfully honors the aesthetic of the late genius, while providing an extremely wearable collection of clothes. It should be noted that Resort comes nowhere close to Fall or Spring collections, which may account for a lack of...something. From the emphasis on tailoring, to the sheer drama and dark nature of the gowns, McQueen's influence is undeniable. I praise Ms. Burton for gracefully executing such a tremendous feat. Alla Kostromichova can be seen below in some of my favorite pieces.

Lovely discoveries can be a frightening find.

Even though I've been done with school for a week or two, I am still readjusting to life at home. "Moving in" has been a trying process, stirring up emotions ranging from anger to joy. Today I happened upon letters written by old friends who I met at a leadership conference. Their kind words left me with a newly optimistic mood, but also had me questioning the person I am today. They praised my spirit, my ambition, and my optimism. I don't fear that my spirit or ambition has died, but my attitude has shifted to a less positive and often critical (in terms of other people) place.

Is it possible that I am quickly on my way to jaded-ness? Or even worse, have I arrived without even knowing it?

I realize that development and maturation are significant in every person's life, and while I am not discontent with the person I am today, I find that there are things I want to work on. Jesus Christ. This is beginning to sound self-help book-y. Perhaps acknowledging one's flaws and making a point to adjust certain things are critical aspects of development.

In any case, these tidbits of nostalgia have left me in a terrific mood, which I will use to propel myself away from any sort of psychological worry. Happy Friday.

Summer in the City.

Though my last post featured praise for the inevitably frequent precipitation of Seattle, the sunshine seen today was undeniably refreshing. There's something beautiful about the effect sunlight has on concrete. Unfortunately, I was stuck inside most of the day at work, but my brief break was euphoric. To my surprise, it was still quite warm late this evening after I left work. A friend and I enjoyed Rancho Bravo and Molly Moon's on Capitol Hill without a shiver to be heard of. Exhaustion plagues me, so I must retire shortly, but I'll leave you with this lovely song from Regina Spektor.

Rain, rain, won't you stay?

I've never understood the disdain many of my fellow Seattleites feel towards the rain. Even those who have lived here their entire lives groan at the sight of a dark, dreary day and the rain that may accompany it. I have always loved the rain, whether it be June or an otherwise more-appropriate time of year. From the sight, the smell, the sound it makes on rooftops, to the sensation of pure water falling on your skin, I wholly appreciate the beauty of rain. Tuesday, my friend Alison and I ran around during a downpour just for the experience. It was rather perfect.

Tonight, I decided I needed a late night after it started pouring, so I grabbed my Hunters, my coat, my iPod, and stepped out. Walks (or runs) have always been a lovely escape for me when under stress or feeling intense emotion and rain always seems to be additionally soothing. As intended, the walk alleviated my claustrophobia/restlessness/whatever is wrong with me. The soulful words of Adele and Beth Ditto completed the beautiful moment.

I should be going to bed now, but we'll see how that pans out.

Homecoming.

Returning to Burien after living in the city has felt strange, especially today. Between constantly working and a prompt evacuation with dufflebag in hand, I've spent a great deal of time away from home. Driving through the suburbs today and observing how life is lived here left me feeling like an outsider. I suppose I have always felt that way, but this was an exceptional moment. Hours have passed and I've hardly left my bedroom. I'd much rather be cooped up than deal with my surroundings. It's quite bizarre that I feel so restless in a place that's supposed to be "home." My job at Nordstrom and friends in the city will no doubt aid me in my lust for the city lights. Have you ever seen a nomad with a silver oversized tote from American Apparel? This summer is bound to be full of a sense of disconnect.

I actually like Calvin Klein...

I've never been extremely interested in Calvin Klein (the brand, not the man). Francisco Costa's work is undeniably impressive, but its minimalist tendencies stand in complete opposite of my personal preferences. If there's anyone who might convert me from my distant stance it's Lady GaGa. Recently she's been out in custom Calvin Klein looking absolutely fetching.

I love the tone this black look sets. Along with a Calvin dress she wears a Somarta bodysuit. She looks like she's going to a massive Gothic cathedral for a funeral. Glorious pain.

The white look she performed in is vaguely similar, though much shorter. So lovely.

I love a fashion sketch.

Bravo Francisco! Perhaps I'll be keeping my eye out for your designs in the future.
