Chanel, finally.

On a day like today—an unfortunately disheartening one—Breakfast at Tiffany's and another look at the F/W 2010 line of Chanel can bring a smile to my face. The latter is going to be the focus of my discussion, as I am far behind in posting on it.

Fantastic does not even begin to describe Karl Lagerfeld's latest collection for the fashion house. With the imported icebergs framing the runway, the models stomped through a layer of shallow water, appearing ready for winter. They might even have been ready for the next ice age. Without a doubt, this was Karl's comment on the environment, seeing as the Copenhagen conference just took place. And what a comment it was. Faux fur was used widely, even appearing in the form of pants. From details to accessories—fur boots with ice block heels, ice cube bags—to the clothes themselves, the collection was genius. It certainly won't be deemed "wearable", though there are plenty of wearable pieces, but I just roll my eyes at the word. The lengthy show was a dream.

Surprisingly, Karl's gorgeous model muse Baptiste Giabiconi was not the only male model on the runway. I curious to know if that is significant. I don't want to stop seeing him. More importantly, feast your eyes.

Sometime tonight I will be attending a Moustache Party. My immediate thought was to somehow experiment with makeup to create something interesting. Then, Madonna's "Justify My Love" video popped into my head.

The controversial video is a little slice of kink that I discovered at a young age, watching a late-night television program about videos banned from MTV. Oh sleepovers. The androgyny is what really captured me, because at the time, it seemed a bit warped in my head. Anyway, the women with pin thin mustaches inspired tonight's face.

Paper Heart.

Procrastination has plagued me this weekend and I'm sure staying up until 5:30 in the morning last night did not help in the process of motivation. I keep telling myself I will be productive, but it has yet to officially happen. Watching Paper Heart and eating pizza tonight didn't exactly contribute to my academic success, but it was a wonderful diversion.



The film was made in an interesting format, having both documentary and scripted segments, though it was treated as a documentary. The adorable comedienne and skeptical Charlyne Yi goes on a journey to find the truth in love, something she does not believe she is capable of. Along the way, she meets Michael Cera, her real life boyfriend. I'm sure you can guess what follows. I found the questions raised to real people provided interesting perspective. I identify most with Charlyne at the beginning of the movie, as I look upon love quite critically. I have no interest in settling down with someone, despite the fact that our society is so driven by the idea of "the one". One of my very favorite scenes of the movie featured Charlyne speaking with kids on a playground. The interaction was hilarious to say the least. The idea of love through a child's eyes seems so far fetched, but some of the kids spoke with wisdom beyond their years. I certainly have expectations and hopes for my future, but I cannot even imagine how my ideas will change.

I just want to be young and free forever.

Yves Saint Laurent

This season, Stefano Pilati's collection for Yves Saint Laurent had undeniable undertones of religious garb. Many of the models were almost completely covered, while a select few were exposed with sheer fabric. Vibrant touches of color pumped up the collection from a fashion house that uses black quite liberally. Another cool little detail was the long gold necklaces. The pendants were silouttes of Seventies YSL ads. This along with a lot of the shapes gave the collection a retro vibe, obviously serving as an ode to Saint Laurent himself. Even so, it was quite modern looking, full of looks that the house's late, great founder would be proud of.

When I think of Giambattista I think of feminine fashion done up with feathers and fur, which can at times cross into the pointedly excessive, such as this gorgeous peacock piece on Leigh Lezark.


Stylesight

As excess is something I treasure, rather than look down upon, Valli often sends me to a fantastic dream word, where I am free to immerse myself in the beauty of his work. I was happy to see he had not completely conformed to the shift to Minimalism that I've discussed in previous posts, though there are some traces of the movement, and lovely traces at that. Nods to the Sixties, from the mini to winged eyeliner, successfully came across as modern and relevant, without losing any luster on the way. A nice touch of the Sexual Revolution came across with sheer fabrics exposing bras, stomachs, and panties, among other elements so cleverly realized.
Now I'm off to keep on dreaming because dreaming is free.
