John Galiano

John Galiano's inspiration this season was the fascinating story of a cunning woman named Maria Lina who infiltrated Paris' upper echelon of artists in the Twenties, posing as an actress, and promising that her portrait would be featured in a horror movie. Instead, she fled to America after having sold the works. The models appropriately crept, posed, and posed some more down the runway, many of them in variations of the trench coat. Exuberance in the form of print and bright color spoke a language of joie de vivre, while the undone styling of the show communicated a taste for mischief. From the yards of organza to the glamorous dresses of a light pallette to the whimsical butterfly motif that kept appearing, this collection was a dream. And a surprisingly wearable dream at that. The dress that closed the show, a cheeky, patched together creation including lace, organza, and butterflies, seemed to perfectly encapsulate the spirit of a legendary menace. Galiano's mastery of escapism has yet to fail him.
