Anna Sui's undying love for the Sixties and Seventies never fails to bring a smile to my face. For her latest collection—marking 20 years in the business—she channeled the expressive era, drawing inspiration from a film called Days of Heaven, Joni Mitchell, and the young women of Laurel Canyon in California. While Joni is the only reference I understand of those aforementioned, the collection communicates ideas quite effectively. Anna adopted techniques used by bohemian artisans, such as patchwork and crochet, managing to channel modernity and nostalgia. The models appeared as a community of young, creative wanderers, searching for beauty, all the while providing it themselves with their work. The smiles flickering across model faces and freedom emanating from their bodies is a consistent refreshment that the veteran designer contributes to the New York fashion scene. No matter what the collective feeling across the design world may be, Anna steps out of the community to bring sunshine to the world.
