Rag & Bone

On Friday night—Fashion's Night Out—Kim, Mackenzie, and I dropped by the Rag & Bone boutique in SoHo. After seeing their fall collection in a digital context I was dying to see it in person. Of course, it was better than I imagined, and the free drinks didn't hurt. This afternoon I was a bit distraught after reading Nichole Phelps review of the duo's Spring 2011 collection, as she declared it "overstyled." She didn't seem all that impressed. Upon seeing it and deciding for myself, I didn't quite agree. It is a lot to take in, but I enjoyed the mix of bondage-looking pieces, croche elements, and sheer fabrics. The colors were also a bit everywhere, but I'm not one for straight and narrow. My major problem with the collection is that it is far too reminiscent of the Spring 2010 collections of Phi (R.I.P.) and Alexander Wang, though I wouldn't go so far as to call it a collection of deliberate knockoffs. I hate to be even a bit critical (can we talk about how terrifying Cathy Horyn is?), but I suppose that's what real fashion journalists get paid to do. All and all, I think they did a decent job, but certainly did not measure up to Fall/Winter. Next time?
